Shomera for A Better Environment was founded with the goal of building a proactive, vital and environmentally sustainable society. Originally formed a grassroots effort to preserve the Jerusalem Forest –a natural retreat for Jerusalemites and the “green lung” of the Capital — Shomera has evolved into an environmental organization with a synergetic approach that combines action and implementation with education and community outreach. Today, Shomera’s educational programs connect ecology and Jewish tradition in diverse and exciting ways. The activities inspire an appreciation of nature and the desire to take responsibility for others and the environment, while imparting practical tools for individual and group action.
Shomera’s approach to enhancing environmental sustainability includes advocacy, environmental education, community programming and resource management. To achieve some of its goals, Shomera initiates and promotes multi-sector collaborations with academia, business and government.
Shomera has launched pioneering initiatives in the areas of natural resource conservation, combating climate change, experiential educational programming, integrating Jewish precepts into environmental education and practice, organic gardening, horticulture therapy, promoting expanded use of greywater, and more. Shomera initiatives have been adopted by other organizations and have been included in their environmental programming – affirming Shomera’s vision.
